The Falls of the Rappahannock Chapter, NSDAR, is committed to supporting education in our community. Through National Society DAR programs, local partnerships, historic preservation, and educational outreach, we offer resources and opportunities for teachers and students throughout the Fredericksburg and Stafford County communities.

Student Programs & Opportunities
Virginia DAR Flag Essay Contest
Grade 4
Fourth-grade students are invited to write a 200–300 word essay on “What the Flag of the United States of America Means to Me,” exploring the meaning of the American flag through their own experiences and perspective.

American History Essay Contest
Grades 5–8
Students explore American history through an annual essay competition open to students in grades 5–8 in public, private, parochial, and homeschool settings. Learn More about the American History Essay Contest →
DAR Youth Citizenship Medal
Grades 5–11
Recognize a student who demonstrates honor, service, courage, leadership, and patriotism. The medal may be awarded to students in grades 5 through 11, with one medal available per grade per school each year.

DAR Good Citizens Program
Grade 12 — High School Seniors
The DAR Good Citizens program recognizes high school seniors who demonstrate dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their schools, homes, and communities. One student may be selected by each participating school.

Junior American Citizens
Preschool–Grade 12
Junior American Citizens (JAC) helps students learn about democratic government, good citizenship, American heritage, and history through clubs, community service, patriotic activities, and contests. DAR Manual for Citizenship
Grades 5–12
Explore the history and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship through this free DAR resource covering the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights, government, democracy, the American flag, and the naturalization process. The manual can be used as a classroom resource for students learning about U.S. citizenship and immigration.

Portable Education Programs (PEP)
Grades K–12
The DAR Museum’s Portable Education Programs provide ready-to-use lessons, activities, primary sources, and hands-on learning materials that bring aspects of 18th-century American life into the classroom, with topics including colonial households, food and clothing, money and jobs, and school and play. Constitution Week Resources
Grades K–12
Constitution Week, celebrated each September 17–23, provides an opportunity for students to explore the history and significance of the United States Constitution.
The National Society DAR offers free educational resources, activities, and lesson materials to help teachers bring the Constitution to life in the classroom and encourage students to understand the foundations of our government and their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Constitution Week Poster Contest
All Ages
DAR members and non-members of all ages are invited to participate in the Constitution Week Poster Contest. Participants create a poster that illustrates or celebrates the spirit or meaning of the U.S. Constitution. The winning poster may be printed and offered for sale through the DAR Store.
